Gold vs Etoupe vs Noir: Which Hermès Color Should You Buy First?

Comparison of Hermès Birkin 25 bags in Gold, Etoupe, and Noir, styled with different outfits to showcase the three iconic Hermès neutral colors.

If you're buying your first Hermès bag, chances are you've narrowed it down to three colors: Gold, Etoupe, or Noir. They're the classics…the colors you'll see most often on wish lists, resale platforms, and in boutique displays. But despite all being considered "safe" choices, they each have a completely different personality.

Having owned all three, I've realized there isn't a universally correct answer. The best first Hermès color depends entirely on how you dress, what bags you already own, and how you actually plan to use it.

Here's how I think about each one.

Gold: The Iconic Hermès Color

There is probably no color more associated with Hermès than Gold.

Warm caramel leather paired with white contrast stitching has become almost synonymous with the Birkin itself. It's timeless without feeling boring and instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the brand.

Gold also has something that's difficult to explain until you own it…it somehow makes structured bags feel softer and more relaxed. A Gold Birkin doesn't feel as formal as a black one, even though it's exactly the same bag.

I also think Gold ages beautifully. Scratches tend to blend into the leather over time, giving it even more character.

Gold is perfect if you:

  • Wear lots of neutrals, beige, cream, denim or white.

  • Live somewhere warm or sunny.

  • Want your Hermès bag to feel effortless rather than formal.

  • Are buying your very first Birkin.

For many people, Gold is the safest first purchase because it works almost year-round while still feeling special.

Etoupe: The Quiet Luxury Favorite

If Gold is unmistakably Hermès, Etoupe is quietly luxurious.

It's one of those colors that's surprisingly difficult to describe. Depending on the lighting, it can look grey, taupe, beige, or even slightly olive.

That's exactly why so many collectors love it.

Etoupe never screams for attention, but it elevates almost every outfit. It works beautifully with monochromatic wardrobes and pairs effortlessly with black, navy, camel, white, olive, and denim.

The famous white stitching also gives it a subtle contrast that makes the craftsmanship stand out.

Of my Hermès bags, Etoupe is probably the one that feels the most sophisticated.

Etoupe is perfect if you:

  • Love understated luxury.

  • Mostly wear neutral clothing.

  • Already own several black handbags.

  • Want one bag that works in almost every season.

If your wardrobe leans minimalist, Etoupe may actually be the most versatile color Hermès makes.

Noir: The Ultimate Classic

Hermès Birkin bags in Noir paired with monochromatic outfits, showcasing the timeless elegance of Hermès' classic black leather.

Noir is exactly what you'd expect.

Elegant.

Timeless.

Impossible to date.

A black Birkin or Kelly can easily be worn for decades without ever looking out of style.

It's also probably the easiest color to pair with formal outfits, evening wear, or professional wardrobes.

That said, I don't necessarily think it's the best first Hermès purchase.

The reason is simple: almost everyone already owns several black luxury handbags. Chanel Classic Flaps, Celine, Saint Laurent, Prada, Bottega Veneta... black is usually the color we already have plenty of.

Hermès deserves to feel a little different.

For that reason, I'd personally recommend Noir after you've already added another signature Hermès neutral to your collection.

Noir is perfect if you:

  • Wear mostly black.

  • Need one elegant everyday bag.

  • Prefer classic over trendy.

  • Want maximum versatility for work and evenings.

There's a reason Noir never goes out of style…it simply works.

Which One Is the Most Versatile?

People often assume black wins this category.

I actually disagree.

For daytime wear, I find both Gold and Etoupe easier to style because they add warmth and softness instead of creating contrast.

Black naturally becomes the focal point of an outfit, while Gold and Etoupe tend to blend beautifully with neutral wardrobes.

If your closet consists of linen, denim, cream knitwear, camel coats, white shirts, and beige tailoring, Gold or Etoupe will probably get more use than Noir.

Which Color Holds Value Best?

The good news is that all three colors consistently perform well on the resale market.

They're considered Hermès staples, meaning demand rarely disappears.

That said:

  • Gold is arguably the most iconic and universally recognized.

  • Etoupe has become one of the strongest collector favorites over the past decade.

  • Noir continues to be one of the brand's most desirable staples.

Rather than choosing based on resale value alone, I'd choose the one you'll actually enjoy carrying. Hermès bags are meant to be used, and the color that fits your lifestyle is often the one you'll love, and wear…the longest.

My Personal Ranking

Since I own all three, this is how I'd rank them for someone buying their first Hermès bag:

1. Gold

If I could only own one Hermès color, I'd choose Gold.

To me, it captures everything that makes Hermès special. It's instantly recognizable, effortlessly elegant, and somehow feels both casual and luxurious at the same time.

2. Etoupe

Etoupe is the quiet luxury dream.

It's sophisticated, incredibly versatile, and works with almost everything in my wardrobe. If your style is minimal and neutral, this could easily become your number one.

3. Noir

Black is essential…but not necessarily first.

I love my Noir Birkin and wouldn't want my collection without it. Still, if I were buying my very first Hermès bag today, I'd choose Gold or Etoupe first. Black is timeless, but it's also the color many of us already own from other luxury houses.

Final Thoughts

There isn't a wrong choice between Gold, Etoupe, and Noir.

They're all classics for a reason, and each has earned its place as one of Hermès' most iconic colors.

But if you're choosing your very first Hermès bag, I'd leave you with this thought:

The question isn't simply which color is the most versatile. It's which one best captures what Hermès means to you.

For me, that's why Gold remains my first recommendation. It embodies the heritage of the house while remaining effortlessly wearable, season after season. Every time I carry mine, it reminds me why it has become one of the most recognizable, and enduring, colors in luxury fashion.

With love, Barbara.
