Why I Keep Reaching for My Hermès Birkin Cargo 35
My Hermès Birkin Cargo 35 in Vert Vertigo has quickly become one of my favorite bags to travel with.
I already own the Cargo 25 in a very dark navy color, which I reviewed here, and it’s honestly one of the bags I use the most because it goes with everything. So I already knew I loved the whole idea behind the Birkin Cargo line.
But the 35 feels like a completely different bag.
This size fully embraces what the Cargo is supposed to be: practical luxury.
A Birkin you actually use.
What Makes the Birkin Cargo Different
The Birkin Cargo is one of Hermès’ more utility-inspired interpretations of the classic Birkin.
Made from canvas with swift leather handles, sangles and trims, the Cargo combines the structure and craftsmanship of a traditional Birkin with a much more relaxed and functional feel.
There are side compartments, front cargo pockets, and utility-inspired details throughout the bag that make it feel sportier and less formal than a classic Birkin, while still keeping that unmistakable Hermès presence.
And honestly, I think that’s exactly why people became so obsessed with it.
It still feels luxurious and special, but there’s something much easier about it.
Especially in the 35 size.
Hermès has released the Cargo in several different color combinations over the years, and each one has a completely different energy. Some feel sportier, others more understated, and the colors really change the personality of the bag.
Here are some of my favorites:
Why I Love It for Traveling
This is really where the bag makes the most sense to me.
I love larger bags while traveling because I always end up carrying way more than I expect, and the Cargo 35 somehow fits everything without feeling overwhelming visually.
iPad, Kindle, AirPods, chargers, my makeup bag, wallet, glasses, mints, passports, watches… everything disappears inside. Yes, it can get a little heavy once it’s full, especially because it’s a top-handle bag.
But I usually place it on top of my carry-on suitcase while walking through airports, so it works perfectly for me that way.
And more than anything, I love that I don’t feel nervous carrying it.
I don’t baby it the same way I would another Birkin.
The canvas changes the entire feeling of the bag.
It feels more relaxed. More practical. More connected to real life.
I genuinely look at this bag and feel like I could take it almost anywhere.
Even the beach.
And I think that’s part of what makes it so appealing.
The Rise of Functional Luxury Bags
I think one of the biggest shifts happening in luxury right now is that people want bags they can actually live with.
Not just admire.
Not just save for special occasions.
Actually use.
There’s been a huge move toward more relaxed bags over the past few years…softer shapes, bigger sizes, canvas materials, suede, practical pockets, lighter structures… bags that feel beautiful but also effortless to carry anywhere.
And honestly, it makes sense.
At the end of the day, even luxury bags become part of people’s daily lives.
They travel with us, go to dinners, airports, cafés, long days out, weekend trips, and sometimes even the beach.
People still care about craftsmanship and beautiful design, but they also want comfort and practicality now more than ever.
And I think that’s exactly why bags like this resonate so much.
If you’re someone who loves beautiful bags but also wants to actually enjoy using them, the Birkin Cargo makes so much sense. It combines craftsmanship, practicality, and that more relaxed approach to luxury that so many people are gravitating toward right now.
